Assemblymember Lisa Calderon Issues Statement in Support of the Recognition of the Armenian Genocide

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTOAssemblymember Lisa Calderon (D-Whittier) today issued the following statement in support of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Biden Administration on the Day of Remembrance for the atrocities that took place over 106 years ago:

“The California Legislature has long recognized the Armenian Genocide and the atrocious acts inflicted upon the people of Armenia over 100 years ago. Today, I am proud to see the Biden Administration finally recognize the 20th century’s first major genocide that took over 1 million innocent lives.

The Armenian community is deeply engrained in the fabric of California, and although an uphill battle at times, over a decade ago, we were successful in erecting the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Memorial signs along State Highway Route 60 near the 57th Assembly District, which serves as a beacon of awareness of all crimes against humanity.

Today, I am humbled to work alongside the members of the Armenian Legislative Caucus to continue elevating their voices.”
