On Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, Assemblymember Calderon Urges Congress to Support Education Efforts

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTOAssemblymember Lisa Calderon (D-Whittier) today issued the following statement on Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day to urge Congress to expand on Biden Administration efforts to recognize the atrocities committed over a century ago:

“This April 24th marks the 107th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Today, we take time to remember the 1.5 million victims of the first genocide of the 20th Century, a horrific tragedy perpetuated by the Ottoman Turkey empire.

While I am grateful to President Biden for taking great steps last year to recognize these events, there is still much work to be done. As a member of the California Armenian Legislative Caucus, I urge our congressional representatives to expand on the Biden Administration’s efforts and to pass the bipartisan Armenian Genocide Education Act, which will fund education programs through the Library of Congress.

Through education and recognition, we can hope to prevent atrocities like those faced by the people of Armenia. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the legislature to advocate for the voices of the Armenian community in my district and across California.”
