Assemblymember Calderon Recognizes the 56th District's 2024 Educators of Distinction

Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Lisa Calderon (D – Whittier) awards teachers from the 56th Assembly district in honor of Teacher Appreciation Month. Seven teachers were selected as the recipients of the inaugural 2024 Educator of Distinction Award for their dedication to advancing excellence in education.  

“Our communities’ educators have demonstrated a profound commitment to caring for students who are still adjusting to life after the pandemic,” said Assemblymember Calderon. “One great teacher can completely change a child’s trajectory. This award recognizes the exemplary teachers in my district for their invaluable contributions to student success.”  

This year’s Educator of Distinction Awardees include:

  • Ms. Sonia Ayala – South El Monte High School, El Monte Union High School District
  • Mrs. Michelle D. Martinez – Durfee Elementary School, El Rancho Unified School District
  • Ms. Michelle Esquibel-Sanchez – Los Nietos Middle School, Los Nietos School District
  • Mrs. Christine Unger – Pantera Elementary School, Pomona Unified School District
  • Ms. Monica Medina-Jimenez – Armstrong Elementary School, Pomona Unified School District
  • Ms. Thelma Krikorian – Whittier High School, Whittier Union High School District
  • Mr. Marino Angulo – La Serna High School, Whittier Union High School District
