Greater Whittier LGBTQ+ Resource Center

I am thrilled to have collaborated with Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn to establish the region’s first LGBTQ+ Center in the City of Whittier.

The Center, operated by the Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (L.A. CADA), provides life-saving resources to all in the region, such as:

  1. Information and Referral Services: Advocacy and referrals to trusted resources tailored for LGBTQ+ individuals seeking support.
  2. Support Groups: Offer peer groups for distinct segments of the LGBTQ+ community, including transgender and non-binary individuals, LGBTQ+ youth, families with LGBTQ+ children, and LGBTQ+ individuals of color.
  3. Substance Use Disorder Treatment: Provide evidence-based practices for counseling, individual therapy, group education and therapy, family therapy, and care coordination, along with service navigation and advocacy.
  4. Mental Health Treatment: Access to licensed mental health professionals experienced in addressing LGBTQ+ specific issues, such as coming out, family rejection, and gender identity, providing both crisis management and ongoing treatment options.
  5. Legal Assistance: Guidance and service navigation for legal issues, including discrimination, immigration, name and gender marker changes, and family law.
  6. Youth Programs: Offer age-appropriate support and programs for LGBTQ+ youth, including mentorship, peer support, and empowering social events.
  7. Educational Workshops: Offer educational workshops on a variety of LGBTQ+ topics, such as ally ship, mental health, and physical health.
  8. Health and Wellness Activities: Promote physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing through activities like yoga, meditation, and exercise classes.
  9. Social Events and Networking: Host events that foster community building, such as movie nights, game nights, and mixers.
  10. Cultural Programs: Highlight LGBTQ+ art, literature, cinema, and history with exhibits, performances, and discussions.
  11. Community Outreach: Partnership initiatives with local schools, businesses, and faith communities to raise awareness and promote inclusion for LGBTQ+ individuals.
  12. Volunteer Opportunities: Create avenues for community members to support and get involved in the Center’s programs and services.
  13. Advocacy: Collaborate with other organizations to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and policy changes at local, state, and national levels.
